Keep a second copy outside your main account
Why it matters: If your main account is locked, taken over, deleted or shut down, everything in it goes at once, backups included. A copy under a different account or on a drive you hold is what saves you.
Best after: Find every place your photos actually live
Do it
- Choose the second home: an external drive you own, or a backup service separate from your photo cloud.
- Download or export the full library, with original files, not compressed versions.
- Include the strays you found: old phones, chat photos and voice messages.
- Set a repeating reminder to refresh the copy, or use a backup service that does it automatically.
Check it worked: Your main photo library exists in at least two places that don't share one account: for example the cloud library plus an external drive, or two different cloud services.
Simply put
Keeping every photo in one account is like keeping every album in one house. If that account is locked or deleted, everything goes at once; a copy under another account or on your own drive survives.
In detail
Automated moderation systems sometimes lock whole accounts with little recourse, and a sync service will faithfully copy a deletion everywhere. The 3-2-1 rule (three copies, two kinds of storage, one away from home) exists because each copy fails for a different reason.
Points toward the Long View: memories that don't depend on any one company's account or decisions.
