Clear Path step · Home · Memories kept in two places
Find every place your photos actually live
Why it matters: You can't protect what you've forgotten about. The most-missed collections are old phones, a parent's laptop and photos that only exist inside messaging chats.
Do it
- List every phone, tablet and computer in the house, plus old ones in drawers.
- List every cloud account that holds photos, including ones from old phones or old email addresses.
- Check messaging apps and family group chats for photos, videos and voice messages that exist nowhere else.
- Note which collection is the 'main' library and which are strays to merge into it.
Check it worked: You have a short list of where the household's photos, videos and voice messages live: each phone, old laptops, cloud accounts, social media, messaging apps, memory cards and old phones in drawers.
Simply put
It's like gathering family photos from every shoebox, drawer and relative's house before you make copies. Collections you've forgotten, like an old phone or a chat full of voice messages, can't be saved until they're found.
In detail
Voice messages and videos of loved ones are increasingly valued and rarely backed up, because chat apps keep them separate from the photo library. Merging strays into one main library first makes every later step simpler.
If this is new to you: This is just a list: nothing gets moved or deleted yet. Jot down what you remember now; you can add the old phone in the drawer later.
Points toward the Long View: one library you control, ready to move wherever you choose.
