Make a sealed recovery kit
Why it matters: Passkeys and encryption make accounts safer and also harder for family to open. A physical kit is the planned way in.
Best after: Write an account map, not a password list
Do it
- Print the password manager's recovery kit and your email recovery codes.
- Add the spare hardware security key, if you use them.
- Add the account map and any device passcode instructions you're comfortable leaving.
- Seal it, store it in a home safe or with your will, and tell your executor.
- Replace the contents when you change any of them.
Check it worked: A sealed envelope or safe holds your password manager recovery kit, account recovery codes, the spare hardware key if you have one, and the account map, and your executor knows where it is.
Simply put
It's like keeping the spare house key and the alarm code in a sealed envelope with your will. Passkeys and encryption keep strangers out; this envelope is the planned way in for your family.
In detail
This kit is what makes end-to-end encryption safe for a family to adopt. Treat it like a house key: hidden, but not so hidden that no one can find it.
Points toward the Long View: strong encryption your family can still open when the time comes.
