Clear Path step · Home · Independence with a safety net
Start with a conversation and agree the family rules
Why it matters: Scams work by isolating people and rushing them. A plan they helped make, and a trusted person to call, protects their independence instead of taking it away.
On your path if you picked “An older parent or relative I help” for “Who's at home?”.
Do it
- Raise it as something the whole family is doing, not something you're doing to them.
- Agree on the safe word together, in person.
- Agree that any request for money, gift cards, crypto or remote access gets a call to a named family member first.
- Agree it's always fine to hang up on anyone, including someone claiming to be police, a lawyer or the government.
Check it worked: You and your relative have agreed, as partners, on the safe word, the callback rule and one rule more: any request for money gets a call to you or another trusted person first.
Simply put
It's like agreeing on a family meeting spot for a fire: decided calmly, together, ahead of time. Scams work by rushing and isolating people; a plan your relative helped make gives them someone to call.
In detail
Being targeted says nothing about intelligence; these are professional operations with scripts and call centers. Partnership matters because a relative who feels policed is less likely to tell you when something odd happens.
If this is new to you: Worried they'll feel talked down to? Present it as something the whole family is doing, you included. Being targeted says nothing about intelligence, and saying so out loud helps.
Points toward the Long View: independence that stays theirs, with family one call away.
